National Stand Up Paddling team for ISA World SUP Champs announced
Stand-Up Paddling South Africa (SUPSA) are proud to announce the names of
the members of the National SUP team which will represent South Africa at the
inaugural ISA World Stand Up Paddle and Paddleboard Championships.
SUPSA are affiliated to Surfing South Africa (SSA), the recognised governing
body for surf riding in South Africa and the official member of the International
Surfing Association (ISA).
The 2012 South African SUP Team has been ratified by the Surfing South Africa
Board of Directors
The event will be held in Miraflores, Peru from 20 to 25 February 2012. The
inaugural ISA World SUP championships include both SUP surfing and racing
disciplines.
"Surfing South Africa congratulates each member of the national SUP team on
their selection to represent their country in this prestigious International Surfing
Association sanctioned event. We look forward to the South African SUP team
holding the flag high in Peru," said Robin de Kock, General Manager of Surfing
South Africa.
The national team to represent South Africa at the world championships includes
the following elite SUP surfers and paddlers.
SUP surfing
Ivan van Vuuren : Melkbosstrand
Justin Bing : Noordhoek
Penny Stemmet : Somerset West
SUP racing
Greg Bertish : Hout Bay
Chris Bertish : Kommetjie
Brigette van Aswegen : Tableview
Bruce Tedder (Hout Bay) has been appointed as Team Manager and Gary van
Rooyen (Kommetjie) as Coach.
"This will be the first time that we are able to put the best SUP riders in South
Africa against top SUP surfing and racing athletes in the international arena,”
said Dom Gaud, Stand Up Paddle South Africa President, adding “We are
confident that the team will do us proud at this historic event."
